What are Title Tags
1: Introduction to Title Tag:
In this article, I will explain what are title tags. A title tag is the text that appears at the top of your browser and in the browser tabs. It also displays in the search engine results as the first line of blue underlined text. It should be a definition of what the page is about.
2: A vital starting point for website optimization:
The title tag should be an accurate overview of your page content. It is a vital starting point for optimizing your website. Every page should have a well-crafted title tag and meta description.
3: The basic SEO rule:
Use your keywords: the title tag, meta description, and meta keywords should all be consistent – this is a basic SEO rule.
4: The length of Title Tags:
![]() |
The title tag has to be restricted to 70 characters. And I mean actual character spaces not just letters, the spaces in between the words also count. I know you are sat there wondering why it has to be 70 when you can fit a lot more in your browser header, Well it’s because that is how much space you have in search engine listings. Google will display an ellipsis (that’s three dots) which indicates the tag has been cut short if you run over.
5: The best practice rules:
(a): Use your keywords at the beginning of the title tag. This will give you the best chance for ranking well (as a real basic technique obviously this is only the framework).
(b): Use your brand name at the end of each title tag. Super well-known brands such as ASDA or NOKIA would start their tags with the brand name. This will be the most recognized search term for their site.
(c): But as you are reading this article I am guessing your brand is relatively unknown so it goes at the end for brand consistency.
6: how to appeal to your demographic:
Remember you are writing for a reader and speak to your reader emotionally. I am assuming you have conducted customer research and have identified your customer personas. So you will have a good understanding of how to appeal to your demographic.
7: Primary importance of Title tags Optimization:
One of the primary importance’s of optimizing tags is to tempt searchers to click on your link in SERP result pages. When faced with a long list of results such as:
- buy dog food, cheap dog food, and more dog food, you need to hit them with a strong reason to click on your link.
- Dog food to help your dog lose weight is more likely to catch a browsers attention over a link that says.
- Dog food, Food for the dog, buy dog food. Keyword stuffed yes, tempting no. It’s all about achieving a balance.
8: Summing up:
So to construct the best title tag format I use keywords separated by the arrow > and a pipe bar | separating my brand name suffix. Such as:
Dog Food > Diet Dog Food > Get your Dog to Lose Weight | DogFood.co.uk
And straight off that’s 70 characters exactly (I’ve been doing this too long!).
9: Now go and make corrections:
Now go through every page of your site and create a relevant title tag. Every page should be different, duplicate title tags should be avoided.
10: Meta Description along with title tags:
You also need to consider your meta description for every page as you craft your title tags as they will be displayed together in search engine results pages.
