DIRECT AND INDIRECT SPEECH
In our daily life, we communicate with each other. The language is the name of effective communication. For this purpose, we speak to someone, or exchange the thoughts with each other. We use different methods for this purpose.
There are two ways to convey the thoughts of others to someone.
1: Direct Speech 2: Indirect Speech.
1: Direct Speech: If the words of someone are conveyed to the other as it were, with even not a minor change, this is called Direct Speech. The spoken words are enclosed in quotation marks (“ ”).
E.g. The teacher said, “Ali is a good student of my class”. (The words in inverted commas are the Direct speech.)
2: Indirect Speech: If only the meanings of words of someone are conveyed to the other, i.e. the words are changed in our own words, the method is called Indirect Speech.
E.g. the teacher said that Ali was a good student of his class.
Reported Speech: The part of the speech, enclosed in commas, is called Reported Speech. The verb of this part is called Reported Verb. The subject of this part is called Reported Subject. The object of this part is called Reported Object.
Reporting Speech: The part of the speech, out of commas, is called Reporting Speech. . The verb of this part is called Reporting Verb. The subject of this part is called Reporting Subject. The object of this part is called Reporting Object.
