FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE

FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE:-

To create a charm in writings, writers and poets use some language tools. Sometimes, they
repeat the words, or make comparisons, or draw the pictures of scenes using suitable words. This
technique is useful particularly in poetry. Some artistic tools are here:

Figures of Speech:

If any word is used in any other meaning, any symbolic meaning or any hidden meaning, it is called Figure of Speech.
Eg. Hard work is the pillar of success.
Here, the word “Pillar” is used as figure of speech.

Simile:

A simile is a technique in which “Like” or “As” are used to make comparison between two ideas that are basically dissimilar.
Her eyes twinkle like stars.
He is as brave as a lion.

Metaphor:

A comparison of two things in which words Like or As are not present. In other words,
we say one thing to be the other.
Eg. Our army proved lion for enemy sheep.
Here the words "Lion" and "Sheep" are used as Metaphor.

Personification:

It is a figurative language technique where an object or idea is given human characteristics or qualities is called personification.
The dancing waves.                Fluttering of daffodils.

Imagery:

Imagery is the construction of details  used to create mental images in the mind of the
reader through the visual sense as well as the senses  of touch, smell, taste or sound.
Eg. Rustling of leaves,
sweet smell of apples,
sweet and juicy oranges etc.

TYPES OF IMAGERY

As imagery belongs to our five senses, it has five types associated with particular sense organs.

1:   Imagery Of Vision:

The type of imagery in which visual images are drawn with the help of suitable words.
e.g “Ten thousand saw I at a glance.”

Also called Auditory Imagery. The type of imagery in which the sense of hearing is created by use of words.
e.g ‘tis a sweet noise to hear,

3:   Imagery of Taste:

The type of imagery in which  the sense of taste is created.
e.g I felt the mellow sweetness of apples.

4:   Imagery of Smell:

.The type of imagery in which the sense of smell is created.
e.g The fragrance of flowers spreads all around.

5:   Imagery of Touch:

The type of imagery in which the sense of touch is created.
e.g She ventured on the rocky path of the rugged mountains.

Alliteration:

Repetition of same consonant sound of words used closely together in a sentence (of any
text or poem) is called Alliteration.
e.g. It was dull, drab and dry day.
She sells sea shells on the sea shore.
The colony has half hundred haunted houses.
